Relationship or Religion?

We hope you have been helped and encouraged by reading the true life stories on this website. It is not a coincidence that you have come to this website and that you are now reading this page. It is part of God’s plan for you. There is a God in heaven who loves us all, and he came down to us in the person of his Son, Jesus Christ. The human problem is that our ‘sin’ (our selfishness and rejection of God and his laws) has separated us from having a relationship with him. God wants everyone to turn to him, but this is a personal choice. He will not force anyone, each of us has been given ‘free will’.

God our Saviour… wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth“.  (1 Timothy 2:4)

“The Lord… is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance”.  (2 Peter 3:9)

God reaches down to us

Religion has been described as “people trying to reach God”. But the Bible tells us we cannot reach God by observing rules or trying to be good because we could never be good enough. This is why God came down to us in the person of his Son, Jesus Christ. To be a Christian is simply to put our faith and trust in Jesus Christ and to follow him. It is recognising that we are powerless to save ourselves, so we need Jesus Christ the ‘Saviour of the world’* to ‘save’ us. God spoke to Jeremiah and said,

You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.” (Jeremiah 29:13)

* “The Father has sent the Son as Saviour of the world.” (1 John 4:14)

Speaking of Jesus, the Bible says,

The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God — children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.

The Word (God) became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.”  (John 1:9-14 )

We have all fallen short of God’s standards. We do not deserve God’s forgiveness and love, but his love and forgiveness is accessible to everyone through Jesus Christ,

all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.”  (Romans 3:23)

You may feel ready to commit your life into God’s hands right now. This is something very personal and you do not need to follow a formula, you can just tell God how you feel and he will understand. You can just tell God in your own words that you believe in him, you believe in Jesus, and want him to save you.

Alternatively, here is a prayer that you can read out and pray to God.

A personal prayer:

Father God in heaven, I admit that I have said, thought and done things that are offensive to you. I have sinned. I have lived my life for myself. I am sorry and I ask you to forgive me. I choose to turn around and to follow you and your ways. I believe that you came down to earth and died on the cross for me in the person of your Son Jesus Christ. You did what I could not do for myself. I come to you now and ask you to take charge of my life. Lord Jesus, come into my heart. Help me to live every day in a way that pleases you. Thank you for saving me. Help me to love you as you love me, and help me to love others as you love them.

In Jesus’ name.  Amen.

Deuteronomy chapter 30

In the Bible book of Deuteronomy, we see that God gave us a simple choice through the prophet Moses, it was to “choose life“. It is is a promise for everyone who chooses to follow God.

See, I set before you today life and prosperity, death and destruction. For I command you today to love the Lord your God, to walk in obedience to him, and to keep his commands, decrees and laws; then you will live and increase, and the Lord your God will bless you in the land you are entering to possess.

But if your heart turns away and you are not obedient, and if you are drawn away to bow down to other gods and worship them,  I declare to you this day that you will certainly be destroyed. You will not live long in the land you are crossing the Jordan to enter and possess.

This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live and that you may love the Lord your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him. For the Lord is your life, and he will give you many years in the land he swore to give to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.”  (Deuteronomy 30:15-20)
