Actress, singer and former cheer leader Cheryl Ladd shot to fame in the 1970’s as one of three beautiful crime busters in the ever popular Charlie’s Angels TV series. But while she looked beautiful on screen, she was in turmoil inside.
During filming of the series, Cheryl was facing disaster with her marriage. Divorce was impending and it looked as though she might lose custody of her little girl. Cheryl turned to God for help. She says,
“I kept praying, kept trying to get a hold of Cheryl Jean… I kept trying to hold onto that little girl,” explained Ladd. “The divorce was such a difficult thing to go through. I was really frozen in a whirlwind of self-doubt, fear, pain, and stuff that I couldn’t talk to anybody about. I couldn’t find any peace, and I just kept praying; and then one day I just found this peaceful place. I knew that I would get through it, and I knew that my daughter would be okay.”
Cheryl had never let go of her faith in Jesus Christ, and his presence helped her through the pain of her divorce. A while later Cheryl met Brian Russell, a man who shared her Christian faith, but who had also had struggles. Cheryl and Brian married in 1981 and are still together. Cheryl says that the reason this relationship has lasted is because of their faith in God and the help he gives when we pray and ask him to be a part of our lives.
“The fact that we started to go back to church together, that we pray together, that we both are on journeys, both of us individually and as a couple…” — are the reasons Cheryl says this marriage is a success.
The golf course in now a regular haven for Cheryl, but even there she has found that God is with her, teaching her and helping her to become more Christ-like. She used to lose her temper when she played a bad round, but now she has found that God has been working through her game, helping her to change little by little. She says,
“In a really strange way it’s a little like life. You think you’re in control, and you’re trying to get that square peg in that round hole. You’re frustrated, and you realise that you’re not in control of everything. You need to just step back and let God.”
Cheryl has released 20 singles and five albums. As an actress she has appeared in over 70 movies and TV programmes or series. In 2014 she starred in the Christian movie The Perfect Wave playing the part of Ian McCormack’s mother. The movie is the true story of Ian McCormack, a non-believer who met God in what is often referred to as an NDE (near death experience). In Ian’s case. he was not near death, he was certified dead by the doctor. Read Ian’s story here: [link]
